Lecture 3, Historical Perspectives, discusses the experience of freedom seekers both within and moving beyond the South, especially to the free North and Canada. The motivations and experiences of the typical freedom seeker, as well as several unique escapes, will be explored.

This lecture looks at the runaway experience through primary and secondary sources, including slave narratives and expert research.
