Elementary Lesson Laura Haviland

“The life of Laura Haviland” lesson plan is designed for grades 1-5. This lesson plan uses primary and secondary sources to help students learn how Michigan UGRR hero Laura Smith Haviland assisted in the Underground Railroad. Students examine Haviland's use of Core Democratic Values through her words and actions. Students will learn about the UGRR and how people in Northern states became involved in the struggle for liberty.

Elementary Lesson Conductors of the UGRR

“Being a UGRR conductor” lesson plan is designed for grades 1-5. Students will be able to use their imaginations while fine-tuning their acting skills as they develop a greater understanding of the UGRR. The hardships and dangers faced by those involved in the UGRR are discussed. This lesson plan uses primary narratives and pictures to help students portray their acting roles accurately. Students will develop knowledge of the system of stops, stations and routes.

“The Drinking Gourd - Destined for the North Star” lesson plan is designed for grades 1-5. This lesson plan introduces the geographic movement of the Underground Railroad and its routes in Michigan to Canada. Students will discover the geography of the Underground Railroad from the slave-holding South to the North. Students will be able to understand Detroit and Canada’s significance to the Underground Railroad.
